The series of prints depicting 24 views of the Krkonoše Mountains and Adršpach Rocks created by the graphic artist Antonín Karel Balzer (1771–1807) constitutes a pioneering work of 19th-century Czech landscape painting. For the first time, central attention was given to the landscape and its natural wonders admired in the individual images by figures that provide a scale to the vastness and grandeur of the surrounding natural scenery. The graphic art series depicts two important natural localities which, in the late 18th century, became destinations of romantic visitors and the earliest tourists. The execution in the form of prints rendered these scenes more accessible to the broad public, and their hand-colouring more visually appealing.
